Chronicles of the Virus Day 28

Some more local news.

The former priest of the next door parish of Araño, Don Manuel, died and was buried yesterday in his native parish of Isorna. He was 85 and his death had nothing to do with Covid-19. His health had been waning for a long time, and was the reason for his retirement. He was parish priest for over thirty years. I still remember the day he gave his first Mass there. My parents and I were here on vacation; I think it was in 1986. Along the lane leading down to the rectory, he had set up makeshift tables to offer some drinks and food for the parishioners to come and meet him after Mass.

He hadn't seemed to remember that when there's food, people show up from under the floorboards. The church was filled with more people than the church had seen in years. After Mass, more than meet the new priest, people were grabbing all the empanada, peanuts, and potato chips they could. Beers and Cokes didn't last long, either. I remember one woman setting herself up behind one of the tables and handing out food to others who thought she was helping out (she wasn't). There was one toothless old lady (who has since had her funeral Mass said by Don Manuel), onions dribbling down her sunken chin, chewing away vigorously with her gums. I also remember a young girl, stuffing peanuts less than surreptitiously into her skirt pockets. Later, there were rumors that some families hadn't bothered to make supper that evening. Did they mingle with the new priest? I think most people who went that day didn't even know who he was.

When Masses are allowed again, and his funeral Mass is said, I doubt as many people will show up. No food.

Speaking of Masses, while they are allowed, they are only allowed behind closed doors with only the celebrant and perhaps a deacon. Yet, the Archbishop of Granada was celebrating Good Friday Mass yesterday to over twenty faithful. Someone called the cops, and the Policía Nacional showed up and ordered everybody out. There are televised Masses, so, if you are so inclined, pray at home.

Those who have a superstitious bent, but are not religiously inclined, find their beliefs in the conspiracy theories and fake news swarming the internet. In Britain, some who actually believe that 5G technology is spreading Covid-19, burned down a new 5G tower recently erected. Humanity hasn't evolved much since women were burned for being witches. Well, in a way, it has. At least the "witch" burnt this time was inanimate.

One doesn't really need to leave the house to see how people don't tend to use all the brain cells available to them.

Like a pair of twin adolescents who broke quarantine to hunt Pokemons. They were in good company. When the confinement began, a 77 year old man in Madrid was also caught on the street doing the same thing. These two eighteen year olds were fined individually and sent back home. And these two are considered legal adults?

It seems there's a dog whose owners are fine with staying home. So, the dog took matters into his own hands and decided to take a walk on the treadmill his owners had on the porch. Sometimes, the dogs are smarter than their humans. And there are certainly some human specimens that you have to wonder about.

Life continues.
