Tsunami, 37. Mental Rambles.
Today is a typical March day, sunny, blustery, and cool. Still, it's nice to be out in the sun, especially since as of tomorrow evening, the rain is coming back. I've not been walking yet, but my back is getting better.
Except for a few cities, like Barcelona, most marches celebrating Women's Day were small, with participants widely separated. But they were out there, reminding everyone that, though we've come a long way, there's still a ways to go to true equality. I'm reminded of an ad for Virginia Slims, a brand of tobacco directed at women, back in the 1980's. It showed a modern woman, stepping hard, smoking a cigarette. "You've come a long way, baby." I suppose that we had, at that moment, since it was no longer taboo to see a woman smoke her way to death.
The good news we've received in our region is that the 50 - 55 age group will begin with the Astra-Zeneca vaccinations this week. Yay! I'm waiting to see when we'll get the message on our phones. Because, the regional health service has warned that all calls to vaccinate will be by SMS. They told us to make sure we had updated our phone numbers with the health service, and that we had activated the SMS service, by which we are now told when we have appointments.
There was an avalanche to do so a couple of weeks ago, and the special number people could call to update their phone numbers, collapsed. Another one was habilitated, and the calls continued. For some reason, that service was started on my cell phone back in 2019 without my asking for it. Since my number is the contact number for each of the three of us, I'm the one getting all the reminders. I don't mind, but sometimes the link provided is bad, and doesn't lead to the page it should. So, I have to copy it out on the computer. Someone hasn't finished their homework in the Tech office of the regional health service.
Another good bit of news is that the regions will most likely be closed for Father's Day weekend, from the 19th to the 21st, and on Holy Week. Perhaps they've learned the lesson from Christmas. Of course, the president of the region of Madrid complained, claiming the economy, the economy, and that hatred against madrileños is being stoked. No, she helped to create that a long time ago, all by herself.
I may not be able to drive outside Galicia, but I won't mind. Not as long as we don't have to lock up again next month.
Life continues.
habilitated . . . American or Spanish, María? :-)
ReplyDeleteErr . . Just found this:
ReplyDeleteIs Habilitate a word?
verb: to clothe or dress; to make fit.
Yes, to make fit. I assume it's no longer used much, but the Spanish speaking side of my head decided to use it, via Latin.
